Wrangling Email
Geek Level for this post = HIGH. You have been warned.
I moved my email accounts to Gmail some time ago, figuring it’d be better than having to constantly change whenever I moved internet providers. Recently, I realized that if I set up the Gmail account on my iPhone as IMAP, I could take advantage of push notifications. Unlike some of my friends, I’m rather addicted to my email, and would rather get them as soon as they come in. This got me to thinking that perhaps my Mail application I use on my iMac should also be set up as IMAP. And down the rabbit hole I went.Apparently, there is no “right” way to set this up. This is because Apple’s implementation of IMAP is not quite standard, nor is Google’s. So after many, many guides that I found on the interwebs, I think I’ve finally gotten something acceptable. One thing I started using a lot more of are filters and labels in Gmail. This has the effect of using rules and subfolders, respectively, in standard email. Now all my email is presorted by Gmail. And since I’m on IMAP, as soon as I read an email, it’s marked as read everywhere. The one hang up is that I wish that as soon as I read an email, it would be “archived” in Mail, or at least have a “archive” button as Gmail web does, but I guess that’s something to strive for in future updates. Also, on the Gmail end, being able to call up contact list groups from within the filters would also be nice.
Update: Forgot to mention that yet another thing I’ve been doing is unsubscribing to various sales notifications and whatnot as they come in.
